InnerVoice: Making It Our Home
When Audrey turned 2 years old and Emily was born, my wife Cristina and I knew it was time to move out of the home I once called a bachelor pad. Space was getting a little cramped, especially for crawlers who knew no boundaries. So, we started home shopping and, eventually, found a place that we could both agree on.
We moved in about a year ago and I can still remember that first night all four of us slept in our new town, inside of our new home, and in our new bedrooms. I remember sleeping with this emptiness inside of me. Well, that emptiness remained for months even after we moved in. I’m sure all of you who have ever moved can relate to what I’m talking about. Whether it’s moving out of state or country, starting college away from friends and family, or starting a new job; we can all identify with that initial feeling of being out-of-place. It’s the feeling that this… just doesn’t feel like home.
I missed Kathleen’s hellos when I went to check the mail. I missed Eric calling me “Unc’ Dave” as he rode passed me on his tricycle. I missed taking Audrey to the playground and watching the ducks in the pond. I really missed having the lawn cut for me. Most of all, I missed the bond I had with the community that I was a part of for seven years.
Eventually, life in our new home started feeling less barren. We soon became great friends with all of our neighbors. Audrey and Emily made friends with the kids around the block. We learned how many cool events they had around the town, like the rubber ducky race. Before we knew it, we were starting to build new memories as we began to make this our home.
In a lot of ways, InnerVoice has also been a “move” for Jim, John and me. In the beginning, we were missing a lot of those feelings of “home,” but God in His gentle and caring ways changed that. It’s been several years now since the three of us first discussed the concept of InnerVoice. I am in awe with the memories that have already been created, the relationships that have blossomed, and the feeling of “home” that we now have with InnerVoice. I look forward to tomorrow with eager anticipation, wondering which one of you I’ll meet next, and what amazing story I’ll hear. I look forward to continuing to build our new home with you.
We hope you enjoy reading this month’s issue of InnerVoice….
